The Walks

This is what you're here for!

The site currently contains details of 27 walks. These are linked from the bottom of this page.

All the routes start from a recognised car parking area. Many are also accessible by public transport. For furthere information vist the Derbyshire County Council public transport website, which gives lots of information about train and bus services in the county.

Planning a walk

Each walk comes with full directions to enable you to find your way and most also have a photograph or two so you get a feel for the area.

Each page also has a link to the streetmap.co.uk site which brings up a map centred on the start point. The 'zoom' tool can then be used to make the scale smaller or (in some cases) larger. The arrow in the centre of the map indicates the start point. In most cases, the walk isn't all shown on the 'streetmap' page at once but you can navigate around to see it all.

For taking with you on a walk I recommend the Ordnance Survey 'Explorer' series map. This is at the larger scale of 1:25,000, which means it contains much more detail than the 1:50,000 version. The one you need for most of the walks is "Explorer OL24, White Peak". The map was previously called "Outdoor Leisure sheet 24" and if you have a serviceable recent copy of that version, it's probably not worth upgrading to the explorer as there are few significant differences between them. Where a walk needs a different map, this is noted in the "walk facts" on the appropriate page.

It's best to print out the route details then plot the route on the OS map before you set out. Use a combination of my directions and the map to guide you on the walk - never rely on my directions alone as they can't help if you accidentally wander off the route.

I've checked all the walks and believe the directions to be accurate. However, the countryside is a living, changing environment so please contact me if you find anything which has changed. I can't possibly monitor all the walks myself but I've had invaluable feedback from many of those who've followed my routes and this enables me to keep them up to date.

The distances given for the walks are approximate, as are the times - always allow plenty of time so that you can enjoy the countryside at your leisure.

If you aren't sure what to take with you on your walk, some suggestions can be found here on the 'Gear' page.
